Wolverhampton Airport Action Group Protest Sunday 29th June - Local Cyclists' Activities
Friday, June 27, 2003

We have a major battle on our hands in this region against something that will ruin the peace, tranquility and special character of the South Staffordshire, Shropshire and Worcestershire countryside. The battle being the potential expansion of Halfpenny Green Airfield (so called Wolverhampton Business Airport) near Bobbington, South Staffs. See http://www.waag.uk.com/ and form your own opinion of the impact on cycling with respect to traffic levels and the case for road expansion along what is presently tranquil country lanes.

Cycle users in Wolverhampton are deeply concerned about this proposal. We have raised concerns with our MPs and have followed democratic channels. BUT NOW IS THE TIME TO MAKE OUR VOICES REALLY HEARD IF WE TO DRIVE THE MESSAGE HOME THAT EXPANSION OF HALFPENNY GREEN AIRFIELD IS A CRAZY ILL CONCEIVED IDEA.

Local CTC RTR Reps in association with Wolves on Wheels Cycle Campaign are leading a cycle ride from the Village Hall, Windmill Bank/Church Road, Wombourne, Nr Wolverhampton, South Staffs see http://www.multimap.com/map/browse.cgi?X=388000&Y=293000&width=500&height=300&client=public&gride=&gridn=&srec=0&coordsys=gb&addr1=&addr2=&addr3=&pc=&scale=25000&advanced=&multimap.x=178&multimap.y=1349.30am
THIS SUNDAY AT 09.30 for a 9.45 start to Halfpenny Green Airfield in order to join the Wolverhampton Airport Action Group (WAAG) Protest. This is a gentle 6k ride via Swindon (or Smestow Gate/Bridgnorth Road for those who don't like hills but can tolerate traffic - we'll go with concensus on the day) arriving at 10.30 latest. Protest march/ride begins at 11am for circuit around the airfield - see WAAG website for precise details. You are more than welcome to team up with us at Halfpenny Green or for a drink later at the Royal Oak Halfpenny Green (nearest PH).

After refuelling at the pub you may like to join some of us for a ride out towards the 'Sheepwalks' near Kinver and then a quick blast back to Wolverhampton via Seisdon, and if we're up to it, Wolverhampton's very own Col... 'de Showell Lane'! Or you may like to join the family riders for a gentle ride back to Wolverhampton.

Its time to stand up and be counted before its too late...or simply to meet up with fellow cycle users/campaigners and find out what else we are doing to promote cycling in the area. Please circulate as appropriate.

Say No the The Airport Expansion!
Tuesday, June 10, 2003

Plans are afoot to expand Halfpenny Green airport into an international monster (bigger than Birmingham International) that will destroy most of the countryside to the West of Wolverhampton.
It will also pave the way (Pun intended) for new motorways including the currently scrapped Western Orbital Route.

This is a pure example of profiteering, with no regards to anything else except the greed of the owners.
The German government has accepted that increased air travel is not a factor in economic growth, why can't the British?
